It's advisable to respect local culture in Rwanda and consider using local guides for safety.
Tourism in Rwanda (RW) is relatively straightforward for many nationalities, and a stay of up to 30 days is commonly available with a visa on arrival or an eVisa. However, visa requirements and length of stay depend on your nationality, so check the rules for your passport before departure. Rwanda does not require separate pre-travel authorizations such as the U.S. ESTA, Korea’s K-ETA, or the UK ETA, and it does not normally use a pre-arrival registration system like Japan’s Visit Japan Web or Singapore’s SG Arrival Card. A paper arrival card is usually not required, and cash declaration thresholds can change, so confirm the latest rule only if you are carrying significant amounts of currency.
Check visa on arrival or eVisa
Many tourists can enter with a visa on arrival or an eVisa, but some nationalities may need to arrange a visa in advance. Check your passport validity and make sure your trip is clearly for tourism, as you may be asked for return/onward travel and accommodation details.
Present passport and purpose at immigration
Show your passport to the immigration officer and state that you are visiting for tourism. Be ready to provide your length of stay, accommodation address, and return or onward ticket if asked.
Possible biometric registration
At Rwanda immigration, biometric data such as fingerprints or a facial photo may be collected depending on the case. A separate electronic arrival card is not generally standard, so follow the instructions at the checkpoint for any screening or registration.
Declare customs items and check restricted goods
Cash, commercial goods, animal and plant products, and medicines may need to be declared, so answer customs questions accurately. Meat products, fresh fruit, seeds, and soil-contaminated items may be restricted for quarantine reasons, so check these carefully before you travel.
Check your stay validity before departure
Before leaving Rwanda, make sure your visa or stay permission still matches your travel schedule. Any overstay can cause problems at departure, so it is wise to review your visa conditions one last time.
Go through departure control and show documents
At departure, present your passport and ticket, and show any stay-related documents if requested. In most cases you will simply pass through standard exit control, and no separate departure tax is usually announced.
Check tax refund procedures at the airport
If VAT refund is available in Rwanda, you usually need to confirm tax-free eligibility and the required paperwork at the time of purchase. When a refund is possible, you will normally need to present receipts and goods at a counter or designated desk before departure, so keep items unused and packed.
